In this listing are two different examples of the same item so that slight differences that can sometimes be present in the same fake piece can be seen. This shape is just one of many different fantasy or fake and reproduction designs of Little Red Riding Hood (LRRH) pottery to be aware of in today's collectibles market. More often than not, these new pieces will be presented for sale as if old. Sometimes this happens because the person selling a new item is honestly not aware that an item is not authentic. But often a seller does know that an item is a new fake and has no qualms about presenting it to a potential buyer as an authentic piece, anyway. Buying new fakes and reproductions for wholesale prices and then selling those items to unsuspecting buyers as 'guaranteed old and authentic' is a lucrative business. Items offered for $125 (as in this listing) can often actually be purchased in bulk, brand new, for less than $10 each.
There are item characteristics that can help to identify non-authentic Little Red Riding Hood items. But in the case of this particular piece all you need to remember is that the McCoy Pottery Company never made LRRH items like those originally made by Hull. This means that any Little Red designed item marked 'McCoy' is always a contemporary fake. This item is also not made of the type of clay used by McCoy. Don't let the blue eyes on these pieces fool you.
These pieces are being made from very low quality ceramic slip. The crazing that is always present on them is not a sign of age but was intentionally produced by their maker.
