Add your name to the roster of movie stars, celebrities and first ladies who've graced themselves in creations by Arnold Scaasi. You'll be in good company with Streisand, Crawford, Bacall, Taylor, Moore, Eisenhower, Bush and Clinton. Scaasi, born Arnold Isaacs in 1930, apprenticed at the House of Paquin in Paris before moving to New York City to work with Charles James. His designing career, stated by most sources, began in the late 1950s.
The necklace presented, circa 1980s, exemplifies his predilection for jewelry that makes as an impression as big as the celebrities he dressed and accessorized. It's "chain" portion, secured with a rhinestone and faux pearl clasp, is comprised of a double pair of golden twisted fine mesh rope centered with a row of faceted glass cubes. Strands are kept in line with horizontal ladder links. The slide style pendant, affixed with "V" bars on reverse, allows for the pendant to have some "give" or movement capabilities while keeping the mesh rope and crystal cubes aligned. The waterfall pendant has a rigid, slightly arched upper portion, alternating with the rope mesh and clear chaton chain links. The cascade terminates with graduated free falling fringes of mesh rope and rhinestones, culminating with crystal cubes.
The necklace is a wearable, fixed approximate 23 inches with rhinestone and simulated pearl embellished push in box type clasp. Width of "chain" portion, when rows are aligned flush is about 1 inch. The pendant proper measures about 4 1/2 inches x 1 1/2 inches. Since it sits up slightly above the triple row chain it actually adds about 3 1/2 inches for a total necklace length of about 26 1/2 inches. Rhinestones are approximately 5 millimeters; cubes, about 11 millimeters. Weight of the necklace is a substantial 138 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original and intact. All mesh rope retains gold tone finish and is free from kinks, pulls, or bends. Glass cubes free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks. All rhinestone uniformly clean and brilliant. No dark, yellow, cloudy or dead stones. All links and soldering secure. No dents or improper bends. Clasp strong and secure. Extremely clean. No damage / no repairs. Excellent / near pristine vintage.
The necklace retains it's original oval hang tag near clasp stamped with "SCAASI" on one side and "CN" (Canada) on the other. The reverse of the pendant is also signed within a rectangular cartouche "SCAASI" and on a smaller cartouche "CN".
