Wonderfully large riveted two piece shield shaped dress clip, circa late 1930s-1940s features a magnificent array of beautifully placed marquise, oval and chaton cut stones in glass and Lucite. At top level, crisp, clear acrylic marquises surround a finely faceted art glass oval (unfoiled and open backed) in cobalt blue. Base tier envelops with oval acrylic stones in cobalt blue separated by brilliant clear chaton rhinestones. Clip's ends feather out with clear marquises.
The pewter tone dress clip (made to be worn as a single) is a generous approximate 3 1/4 inches x 2 inches with a 1/2 inch profile or height. Marquises are about 15 millimeters x 7 millimeters; center oval, 14 millimeters x 10 millimeters; base ovals, 12 millimeters x 10 millimeters and chaton rhinestones, 4 millimeters. Weight of the clip is 36.9 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. All stones intact, retaining colors and brilliance. There are two flea bite nicks on top of center oval glass stone, as can be viewed in photos. We do not believe this affects overall presentation and the issue is reflected in price. All stones secure within pronged and cup settings. No dents or improper bends to metal components. Riveting strong and secure. All pewter tone finish intact, front and back. Clip mechanism strong and secure with snap shut closure. Clean No repairs. Issue as noted. Excellent vintage.
The clip is stamped on top of it's paddle mechanism: PAT 1801128 ( 8 is difficult to see). This utility patent dates the mechanism from 1931. Of course, these clips were used for a number of subsequent years. The back bracing has some interesting marks unattributed to a specific maker. There are perforated circles as well as diamond shapes enclosing with what appears to be oval shapes flanked by circles. Quality designed and executed. Circa 1940s.
