A wonderful late 18th/early19th century creamware hooded rocking cradle finely modeled in a basket weave design with delicate open handles on the sides and glazed in a rich, lustrous green. It is widely believed that these charming little items were given as christening gifts.
The cradle measures 4 3/4" long by 2 1/8" wide by 3 1/4" high. It is in very good undamaged condition. The tip of the right front rocker was broken off at time of manufacture as it is underglaze. There are a couple of firing cracks which have also been since time of manufacture and mentioned only for the sake of accuracy. There are no chips, cracks or restorations. The glaze still has a wonderful luster.
This delightful piece would have been potted in one of the Staffordshire potteries and dates to about 1780.
