The popular Oriental pattern shown here features a dark blue transfer pattern which has been enhanced with color. This has been called one of the most popular polychrome with luster Chinoiserie pattern. Sources agree that the scene depicted is from THE ROMANCE OF THE WESTERN CHAMBER. The maid, Hung Niang has carried a message from Ying-Ying, her young mistress to Mr. Chang asking him to come to her in the garden in the evening. The scene on the bowl is of Mr. Chang scaling the wall, having dropped his boots before him. Ling-Ling is standing in the garden, and Hung Niang is seated at the window in her role as chaperone. The plate still have bright colors and are very beautiful. The plate is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. IT IS RARE TO FIND ANTIQUE EARTHENWARE IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
