The interior of this small box has a padded lining of cream silk satin with the gold imprint ‘The Gorham Co. New York’. The deep blue/purple velvet-lined base holds five silver gilt tools which comprise a double penknife (marked sterling and another mark on one blade), a needle case marked sterling, scissors with blades marked ‘D & B, Germany’ with gilt handles, a gilt and turquoise enamel thimble (unmarked) and a stiletto marked sterling. All five pieces sit in precise spaces in the velvet. The box closes securely. It was originally covered with leatherette with gilding which has completely perished and disappeared on the top and bottom. This could possibly be replaced or else the box could be painted for better presentation. Its current state can be clearly seen in the image. The enamel of the thimble is in good condition apart from one tiny black stain and a minute nick in the enamel - otherwise the tools themselves are in very good condition for age. With a little restoration, this set could be returned to its former glory and the tools themselves are totally collectible in their own right. The fact that the tools are in a fitted box marked for The Gorham Co. New York certainly adds to their interest. 4.1 ins (10.5cm) x 3.25 in (8.4cm). Weight 106 grams.
