This vintage Hobe necklace is a neck's delight. It's a unique design that combines ruffles of goldtone, silvered black glass stones, and aurora borealis crystal rhinestones. This kind of innovative design is the reason Hobe made jewelry for the Ziegfeld Follies and for just about every movie star in Hollywood, including Bette Davis and Ava Gardner.
Now it's your turn to be in the spotlight (you can handle it...just smile and wave to the paparazzi) with this beautiful unusual Hobe necklace.
It measures 16 inches around, ending in a hook over clasp. It's 1 1/4 inches wide. The back shows how well this is constructed with figure 8 links for support.
The necklace is marked HOBE on a cartouche on the back. The ruffle furls of the metal show very minimal signs of use. All the stones are intact and bright, both around the furls and along the rhinestone chain. Excellent vintage condition. Circa 1940s.
Mini History - Hobé Cie was founded in 1887 by goldsmith Jacques Hobé, but it was his son William who established an American offshoot of the company in 1927. That put Hobé at the beginning of the American costume jewelry boom between the two world wars. Some scholars believe that Hobé actually had a hand in the phrase “costume jewelry” itself. After the younger Hobé landed in New York, but before he started his company, one of his first assignments was to make costumes and jewelry for the "Ziegfeld Follies." According to some historians, Florenz Ziegfeld described the jewelry that accompanied Hobé’s costumes as costume jewelry. And that, folks, is how we all came to be here.
