About West by Southwest:
Beth Shirley moved to the Southwest in 1992 and began collecting Native American art, including Pueblo pottery and Navajo rugs. As my interest and knowledge grew through extensive travel throughout the Western US, my appreciation for the unique culture and heritage of this special place initiated a desire to preserve and document the arts of the area. Additionally, I discovered an interest in Outsider and Folk art, which I see as a natural extension of my love for the primarily self-taught Native American arts that have been passed down generation to generation, typically without art training. I earned a PhD at the University of New Mexico, where I immersed myself in the study of American art, culture, and history. Here, West by Southwest presents a curated glimpse of the past and present through American fine arts and folk crafts.
