About UsHaving grown up with antiques, Wayne Mattox joined the family business on a full-time basis as a buyer and working quality antique shows in 1986. He graduated with honors receiving an Associate’s Degree from Paul Smith’s College in upstate NY and a BS in business from Florida International University.
Featured on History Channel's American Pickers, Mr. Mattox is a noted expert in areas of American furniture, folk art, paintings, glass, pottery, ephemera and collectibles. He has broad experience in almost all areas of American and European antiques. Founding President of the Woodbury Antiques Dealers Association and past President of the Woodbury Lions Club, Mr. Mattox has twice been honored as “Lion of the Year” for his dedication to local and national charitable causes. He has served as celebrity auctioneer for many large-scale fundraisers including Waterbury’s St. Mary’s Hospital and Flanders Nature Center of Woodbury.
Wayne’s distinctive humorous, creative and educational approach to antiques and history has drawn large crowds in numerous charitable public speaking and audience-involved appraisal events conducted throughout the Northeast. A continuing student and owner of an immense reference library, Mr. Mattox has taken numerous courses on antiques and related fields through NYU, Chautauqua and museum-directed seminars. Wayne’s teaching endeavors include antique related lectures at public schools and instructing a course on “Appraising American Antiques” for the University of Connecticut’s Continuing Education program.
Mr. Mattox began writing his popular weekly magazine and newspaper column, Antique Talk in 1995 and has published over 500 articles encompassing the broadest spectrum in his field published in newspapers, magazines and web sites throughout the United States and Canada. Antique Talk has been one of the most popular antique instructional web sites over the years, drawing thousands of new visitors each week. Wayne Mattox has been interviewed on cable channels in CT and was featured on the award winning Boston based television program, “Chronicle.”
Beginning the new century, Mr. Mattox sought out yet another new challenge, assuming manager’s role for a country auction house. Three years following, the New York Time would dedicate a full page article describing that businesses rising success.
Achieving his goals there, the entertaining auctioneer established two new proficiently organized auction businesses partnering with friends, Craig Caba and Carl Hotkowski who now maintain their own successful firms. Mr. Mattox currently owns and operates his own Connecticut auction business specializing in estate sales and is well known by collectors and dealers alike for his charismatic high energy auctions with standing room only audiences. Wayne also runs a “power-selling” rated eBay business featuring fresh-to-the-market antiques from local estates. Inquiries for all auction and other Wayne Mattox Antiques businesses will be met promptly with courtesy.
Approaching 20 years Wayne Mattox maintains a busy antique appraisal business serving trust attorneys, insurance agencies and home owners in need of appraisal services. Individual item appraisals are charged at a minimum one hour rate.
Sharing passions for antiques, tennis and golf, creative conversation and the arts, Mr. Mattox got lucky October 16, 2004 and married his Irish sweetheart, Kathleen Dowd. Ms. Dowd received a BS from Cornell University and an MBA at Fordham. A brand marketing pharmaceutical executive, Ms Dowd’s accomplishments at Pfizer included launching two of the best selling drugs in history and placing sixth in Time Magazine’s 2007 “TOP 10” list for medical breakthroughs. As Senior VP, she headed up marketing at Boehringer Ingelheim, the world's largest private pharmaceutical company. A quick student under what she considers a fine teacher, Kathleen’s knowledge and great eye for antiques is equally suited to design. Her vision for renovations to their Greek-revival estate have come to fruition masterfully.
