This is an old tin that originally held a dozen Mars wood pencils, probably the Lumograph kind. In the center of the hinged lid is a profile that I assume to be the Roman god of war, Mars. Inside on the lid is another variation of the logo and it is repeated again on the heavy paper inset that unfolds to another piece that reads; Staedtler Pencils since 1662. There is an additional paper insert that reads; Tradition Chromo - The Colored Pencil with a list of colors that were available. The back edge of the lid reads; Germany. There is part of a paper label on one end that reads; 2886 8.
The empty tin measures about 7 1/8” by 2 1/8” by 11/16” and is in good condition with minor wear, primarily on the bottom. The heavy paper inset piece is missing one flap.
