This old ice cream dipper was manufactured by the Geer Manufacturing Company of Troy N.Y. and patented in 1905. I believe the shank and handle are made of a combination of nickel plated brass and bronze and the bowl is probably made of nickel silver. This scoop is unusual because it has two attached scrapers, that move as one, on the inside of the bowl. The lever is also unusual and works contrary to most other scoops. This is a number 12 round bowl (twelve scoops to the quart) and A12 is stamped into the handle just below the thumb lever. On one side, molded into the metal handle is the following information. Geer Mfg. Co. Troy, N.Y.. On the other side is; Clipper Disher Pat. Feb. 7, 05. The end of the handle has a manufactured hole so this can be easily hung. The patent records show that the inventor of this scoop was Rasmus Nielsen. This is in original condition and has not been buffed or polished.
It measures about 9 ¾” in overall length and the bowl measures about 2 ½” in diameter. The handle measures about 1 ¼” at the widest point. The mechanism works well with the spring being tight. It is in good original condition with some wear on to the plating with areas of the brass and bronze are showing through, especially where the handle attaches to the bowl. The bowl has light scratch wear and minor nicks from more than 100 years of use. The leading scraper sticks out slightly higher than the bowl but this appears to be a manufacturing detail and not a flaw (shown in the photos). It does not inhibit the use although this would probably be considered more of a collector’s scoop rather than an everyday user.
