Handmade Victorian-inspired Fine Jewellery
About Melissa Anderson JewelleryI am a designer goldsmith from Auckland having studied jewellery manufacturing and design at Manukau Institute of Technology.
Victorian jewellery has been a huge influence in my work, I adore the sentiment behind it as I find it so beautiful; being a wearable token from a loved one. Aesthetically so much detail and care was taken whilst designing and making each component of every piece of Victorian jewellery which has become somewhat of a philosophy for me in my work.
I have always been very interested in art-oriented fields like drawing, painting and designing so this coupled with my fascination for seeing both of my grandfather’s working in their workshops, not to mention my nana's amazing jewellery collection, eventually led to studying jewellery. The workshop for me is something of an anomaly as I have always found it intriguing that a beautiful piece of jewellery can come from a very physical and usually rather messy process of melting, forging, soldering and setting all done in a workshop.
My work is made first by designing and drawing templates onto metal then working with traditional goldsmithing techniques such as piercing, filing, granulation, soldering and constructing all components of each piece individually. I work with hand selected precious and semi-precious gems, pearls and pre-owned components to create one-off handmade pieces of jewellery
