My love of fine art and antiques started at an early age, going through my grandmother's cabinets of treasures collected as a military officer's wife living in Europe after World War II. She has stories of trading coffee and cigarettes for porcelain, silver, glass and other lovely objects. Later, I studied Art History in college and went on to take the American Arts Course at Sotheby's in New York. Although my career let me to the practice of law, I longed to pursue a more aesthetic path. Hileau Boutique was born when I offered to help a relative sell a large chest of inherited jewelry. The jewelry had been picked over by family and had been in storage for ten years. As I unpacked and sorted hundreds of pieces of jewelry, I thought I was looking at the type of costume jewelry one typically sees in thrift shops--basically junk. There was some overlooked gold and platinum, and I surmised a few pieces of silver had value, but the rest would be a challenge to sell for any value. I purchased several reference books and discovered that this was an extraordinary collection by a woman who knew what she was doing. There was Scandinavian silver, turquoise and silver pieces from Taxco, Mexico, from the 1950s, and a trove of designer signed vintage pieces. I developed an appreciation for the skill and labor that can go into costume jewelry, particularly pieces that have survived many years and are considered vintage and antique. I have continued to study and learn, and now also design my own jewelry, using components from other pieces, and often upcycling to solid gold findings, doing my part to reuse, repurpose and recycle. I hope you enjoy my special curation.
