About Us
Supplying antique dolls and their accessories also costumes handmade by me - international award winning couturier Jean Jackson of French Doll Costumes. I have always been a stitcher, from so young an age I cannot remember starting. In the early 80's I took up dollmaking and collecting antique dolls as a vehicle for my needlework, becoming an international award winning artist and teacher. Textiles and needlework have always been my true passion so in 1995 I gave up dollmaking to go to college for 5 years as a mature student studying the history and techniques of needlework and embroidery. After becoming qualified I continued to create doll costumes for my antique dolls following original couturier techniques and standards. I make all my own patterns inspired by the hundreds of photos and books in my collection. I use antique fabrics and appropriate new fabrics like silk, lawn and wool, antique lace, trim and silk or rayon ribbon. ( Rayon ribbon is acceptable as it was invented in 1855 and in common use as ribbons and trim by 1891 rayon fabric was not in use until 1930 as early rayon fabric was highly flammable). I use buttons and hand worked buttonholes, snap fasteners invented 1885 and hooks and thread loops, ( hooks originally invented in 14th century) but the more modern style the Delong hump hook was invented in 1889. I never make two dresses exactly the same, each one is a unique work of art, as perfectly stitched on the inside as it is beautiful on the outside. One of my most pleasing accolades came fromTheriaults, when an antique doll sold at their auction wearing one of my dresses which they described as "exquisite". See the Bru in the teal dress on page 55 of “The pup in the ruffled cap, the boy in Papa's shoe”. I hope you have as much joy owning one if my creations as I have had in making it.
I hope you will always find something lovely in my shop, where you will receive a warm welcome and friendly service.
I do not charge a handling fee or restocking fee. I do recycle packaging - doing my bit to save the planet - but rest assured it is always clean and fresh and in good condition. My home is a no smoking no pet home. If you have any questions or require more photos of any item I am more than happy to oblige.
