About UsHello fellow jewellery addicts!
I have always had a passion for beautiful things. My addiction to vintage began around the death of my American Step-Grandmother Maxine, a wonderful warm-hearted Southerner with a larger than life, fur-coat no-knickers personality and a wardrobe to match. I will never forget going through her garage after her death - the chinese silk suits, the spotted furs, the crinolines, lace and taffeta. I was about 11 and I have yet to recover from the excess of riches I encountered that day. In austere late 70s Britain such exotic opulence was quite overwhelming and made America even more entrancing as a country; especially to an awkward, pubescent, English girl.
So, I started my collection young and learnt as much as I could and worked in a Jeweller's before university. I had very little money, but a good sense of style, so scoured secondhand shops and picked up a few choice 20s and 30s pieces - a Whitby jet, French jet and Czechoslovakian glass sautoir; faceted cherry amber beads; briolette cut pale amethyst drops mounted in rose gold - and these are still some of my favourite things.
Eventually life and travel (and men) took over - I was a model in London, an Au Pair in Italy, spent time in Canada and Switzerland and was very fortunate to study at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts for a semester. Then I returned home to England, became a psychiatric nurse and therapist, got married to my beautiful husband, had two wonderful children and emigrated to BC. Well, as you can imagine it wasn't quite that straightforward! But let's leave it at that.
Everywhere I went I carried on buying and learning and taking courses (I make my own jewellery and beadwork too) and friends and loved ones added happily to my haul and encouraged my constant quest to retrieve forgotten, but often beautiful, objects from obscurity. Then six years ago I discovered Ruby Lane and as my knowledge base deepened, my passion for jewellery went stratospheric! I hope to reflect that growth in passion, knowledge and expertise in the pieces that I select to sell to you from my now vast collection and (together with my current occasional work as a photographic stylist and make-up artist) to help you enhance your own unique beauty and sense of style too.
In my world, just one choice item dangling from the earlobe, draping around the neck, glinting on the finger or encircling the wrist does more for a woman's beauty and inner glow than a thousand facelifts!
