About UsDecorum Rugs & Antiques is a small business based in southeastern Michigan operating out of Grosse Pointe and Ann Arbor. Set up an appointment to see our rugs and collectibles in person, or use our rug finding services at no cost to you.
Decorum was founded by mother and daughter team Sandra Walters and Rachel Corrigan in 2015. During her college years, Sandra accompanied her family to Iran when her father accepted a 1-year, teaching Fulbright grant at Teheran University. Sandra attended the University of Teheran and taught at a Persian kindergarten where she learned to speak decent Farsi and was smitten with a huge appreciation of everything Persian. Since then she has been an avid collector of handmade rugs and now has turned her passion into a business with the help of her daughter Rachel. Rachel grew up in a home filled with antiques and hand-made rugs, and was pleased to partner with her mother in a business that incorporates both of their interests and passions. With the birth of Rachel's first child this year, running the business has been turned over to Sandra who is now assisted by her husband, Ken who is a Professor of Classics and has an interest in all antiquities including ancient coins. So, it still remains a family business with Web and IT support from youngest son, Chris.
While furnishing their own homes, and collecting rugs for many years, Sandra and Rachel realized there was not a marketplace for an everyday buyer to make an informed purchase at an affordable price in their area. Often consumers would find an affordable rug at an estate sale or flea market, but there was very little or no information about it available, and so, the consumer had no idea of the value or authenticity. The idea of buying an authentic Persian, oriental, or tribal rug as an uninformed consumer is a gamble – you can hit the jackpot or, most likely, overpay, or pay for a rug that turns out to be something other than what you thought. In fact, this has happened to us!!!
So between flea market, estate sales, auction sales, brick and mortar retail purchases, Bingo!!!, Decorum found a niche. All used, handmade, hand-knotted rugs need to be authenticated for design versus origin, quality of materials, wool, silk, cotton, other, any and number of repairs, and in some cases dying touch- ups, or hard material damage areas. So when you buy from Decorum you know what you have and avoid Caveat Emptor and make an informed purchase decision.
Decorum Rugs & Antiques is here to fill the gaps between the flea market, auction, and the retailer. We provide our customers with authentic handmade rugs at affordable prices while educating you about your purchase. Each rug will come with a RUG DNA – a provenance that tells you the region, age, retail value, and additional details of your purchase so that you know what you are buying. To keep the cost of each rug low, shipping is not included in the price, but instead is calculated based on your location and speed of delivery. This allows us to sell each rug at a base cost without including the maximum shipping charge. As our customer you will pay the lowest price for the rug based on your location.
Unless stated, all of our rugs are professionally washed and receive end and side stabilization prior to sale. All of our rugs are unique, one-of-a-kind, hand-knotted or flat weave Works of Art with different levels of wear and condition. These rugs have origins that range from Turkey, Iran (Persia), Azerbaijan, the Russian and Persian Caucasus regions, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Kurdistan, India, Pakistan, and China. We only sell hand-knotted or hand-woven rugs. We do not sell machine-made rugs. We have 5 Star customer satisfaction from previous purchases.
We will do our best to provide you with the most accurate information, but keep in mind that sometimes even the experts disagree. Please inspect photos closely before ordering to see the condition of each piece. Some of the rugs listed are up to 140 years old and have considerable wear.
We hope to offer antique and other collectables (jewelry, coins) in the future.
As always, we are happy to answer any questions you have about individual pieces.
With Warmest Regards,
Decorum Team of Sandra, Ken, Chris, and Rachel
