About Us
Having been a "collector" since early childhood, my interest in antiques was fully developed by the time I entered high school. After graduating from Western Washington State College, Bellingham, Washington, in 1971 (Major in French, Minor in History), I wanted to find work in the antiques business. My opportunity arrived when I was hired, in March 1972, by the publisher of The Antique Trader Weekly newspaper, headquartered in Dubuque, Iowa. I moved to Dubuque and continued to be associated with this company for my whole career, some 36 1/2 years. In addition to serving as Editor and Editor-at-Large of The Antique Trader for thirty years, I also took over the editorship of the Antique Trader Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide in 1987 and continued to be the head of that publication until the end of my career in 2008. All during my working career I remained very active in all aspects of the antiquing world, joining numerous collecting clubs, giving lectures and teaching courses on a wide range of antiques as well as working at appraisal clinics. Between 1995 and 2001, I was an instructor with the appraisal studies program of The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Here I presented an intensive course on the "History of American Glass," a course sponsored by the American Society of Appraisers. Between 1998 and 2002 I served as co-host of the weekly "Antiques & Collectibles" radio call-in show that aired on Air America and appeared on the nationally televised "Personal FX" collectors' show in 1997. Since 2010 I has been the appraiser on the "What's It Worth Palm Springs?", a local television show. During my long career, I wrote many feature articles, such as "Emptying the Attic," (Encyclopedia Britannica 'Book of the Year,' 1981), and authored my own book on glass, "Collector's Guide to American Pressed Glass, 1825-1915" (Wallace-Homestead 1992). My editorial work production included some 36 individual editions of price guides on various topics as well as a number of other books including "White Ironstone: A Collector's Guide" by Jean Wetherbee (1996); "Wedding Traditions - Here Comes the Bride" by Joanne Dubbs Ball and Caroline Torem-Craig (1997) and "Fifty Years of Collectible Glass, 1920-1970," Volumes I and II, by Tom and Neila Bredehoft (1997 & 2000). Over the years, my love and appreciation of fine antiques and collectibles has never wavered and I look forward to keeping active in the exciting world of collecting as well as to helping other collectors' find that special treasure.
