NEW DOLL TALK: CAMPBELL'S KIDS AND OTHER CREATIONS OF GRACE DRAYTON

Campbell Kids were first used as part of an advertisement for the Campbell Soup Company in 1904. Just about everyone remembers those sweet little kids that were created by illustrator Grace Drayton. Ruby Lane was invited by the UFDC Doll Museum to have a special one-on-one interview with composition doll expert, Ursula Mertz. This Special Exhibit contains many rare examples of early Campbell Soup Kids dolls as well as memorabilia and other creations of this talented illustrator. This interview is available on the Ruby Lane Dolls Facebook video playlists and the Ruby Lane YouTube channel.

1920'S ERA PLUSH MUSICAL BEARS AND ANIMALS

Due to cultural influences, many fine European and American soft plush companies began producing novelty items in the 1920's. These items matched the look and feel of the "Roaring 20's" and were often jewel or pastel colored, had feminine or youthful forms, and playful personalities. Manufacturers would take their best-selling animal designs and update them as purses, pajama bags, animal dolls, and rear-view mirror car danglers - among many other things - to satisfy the public's hunger for these upbeat items.

A favorite among the 1920s "flapper set" were musical animals. High quality, European made music boxes became available on a large, commercial scale in the mid-1920's. Today, given their ephemeral nature, feminine and endearing presentations, and short time in production, 1920's-era plush musical novelties are favorites amongst antique toy collectors worldwide. ON THE BLOG: WHY WE LOVE DOLLHOUSES (AND YOU SHOULD, TOO!) ‌

We love dollhouses on Ruby Lane for the same reasons collectors do. They teach us history and basic architecture, promote design skills, inspire interior decorating, and advocate good housekeeping and love of home. There is no end to the miniature worlds that can be created - no two are alike; but all welcome the collectors who love them. Our Top 5 reasons to love dollhouses is now on the Ruby Lane Blog.
