FOR THE LOVE OF BEARS

It is tough to find anyone who can resist a cuddly stuffed animal. The teddy bear's debut in 1902 changed everything. Steiff, Ideal, Kruger, Knickerbocker, Schuco, and many, many more manufacturers began to produce teddies, lions, tigers, and bears, 'Oh my!' Stuffed plush bears and animals by talented artisans and manufacturers are iconic for holidays, especially Valentine's Day. A whole new generation is now searching for vintage and artisan-made bears for their cuddle-worthy hugs and sunny dispositions. Shop bears and fine plush for Valentines on the Dolls Lane.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH & DOLL CULTURE

African American doll artists have contributed to the art and study of dolls with remarkable creations in all media. Floyd Bell began making dolls well over 30 years ago. His hand-carved and jointed creations are his most recent passion. Another pioneer black doll artist was Roberta Bell, (1904-92), who coincidentally is unrelated to Floyd Bell. Roberta Bell first began making dolls in the 1940s and used a variety of media including papier mache, cloth, and self-drying clay. She was known for meticulous research and for creating dolls of famous African Americans. Her work is on display at The Philadelphia Doll Museum, which features black dolls, and she has been called a trailblazer for her art.

Stay tuned to the Ruby Lane Dolls Facebook page for coverage of Dolls + Black History Month, and exciting contributions from guest bloggers, authors, and historians on the subject.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Love is in the air! Dolls, bears, and Valentine's Day are the perfect combination. We rounded up some of our favorite Valentine picks - treat yourself, your sweetie, or your doll. Everyone loves a vintage Valentine. This Valentine's Day, dress your dolls with red or pink accessories, take out your angel and cherub figurines, serve heart-shaped cookies, and surround yourself with love, kindness, and friendship. That is, after all, the spirit of doll collecting.
