This is a spectacular Pendant - Locket. It is a hallmarked French piece which dates from roughly the mid 1800's. The hallmark is of Mercury which is the French 18K Guarentee export hallmark. This is photographed on the bail. This is a dual use piece, so let me expiate. It can be worn as a brooch as is, or the pin can be removed by unscrewing the hinged portion and folding down the C clasp, then it can be worn as a locket alone with out the pin. Such a finely crafted piece and I have yet to get to the description...... The back possesses a framed glass compartment with slips under the bail ring for added security from the friction closure. The outer edges a scalloped design with a ball motif between each scallop. It is them followed by a twisted rope design with a ball motif in the center of each scallop. The front of the locket is adorned with three soldiered tassels with stable fridge. The top of each tassel is adorned with a floral design with the center stone being a square old cut sapphire with seed pearls at each petal. The center tie to these three tassels is adorned with 3 rose cut diamonds. The construction of these adornments can be seen from the back. The bail is a large one which is adorned with graduating in size seed pearls, the smallest closest to the ring is missing. This is the only imperfection that I see on this amazing dual functional beauty. The condition is impeccable. A delightful piece, indeed.
