An incredible, museum quality, 18th century Spanish Colonial carved and polychromed wood Corpus Santos on the cross. This is from a recent estate of a large collection of religious art from the 16th -19th centuries. The cross is about 51" tall and 34.5" wide, the Christ figure is about 31.5 tall from the hands to feet, and 27" wide hand to hand. He has glass eyes with one eye partially closed as he most likely near death. He also has an open mouth.
The cross has some painted decoration as you can see and a gessoed column capitol on the top. I would imagine this being the original cross to the corpus. Nice muscled details on his arms and the nails are carved wood too. He most likely had a horsehair wig originally and a halo which are gone.
The Condition of this sculpture is very good for its age. There are signs of age including some mild polychrome peeling in areas and wood shrinkage along with small fissures and small cracks, but nothing that detracts, considering its age. There are tiny holes from old wood worms, but they no longer exist on/in the sculpture. These religious carvings that survived, were usually painted over over the centuries to keep it fresh. It's been a long time since this one was repainted but it still is a marvelous piece just as is. It is quite a magnificent piece with a presence of serene calm when gazing upon it.
Because of the size, age and delicate nature of the sculpture, it will have to be sent freight most likely crated and blanketed.
