AMAZING! We came upon this painting in Newport Beach, CA recently and just fell in love. It depicts race jockey Bill Shoemaker (1931-2003) sitting on a horse called Goalie at the Santa Anita race track. You can see the incredible San Gabriels in the back and almost looks like a plein aire painting. Very nicely done and with vivid colors by listed artist James Nelson Slick (1901-1979), although undated, I am sure it is 1950's-60's.
The frame measures about 43.5 x 37.5" and the canvas is about 36 x just under 30" and is in great shape with some gesso loss on the frame especially corners and there are a couple small areas on the horse with some craquelure but does not detract from the beauty. The canvas has no tears or repairs. Mr. Slick painted several horses but to see this celebrated jockey at this track is just incredible. The tag said the horse was named Goalie and I tried researching it but to no avail so not sure exactly who Goalie was or is this another horse?
Professionally packaged and shipped insured for its size will be a tad steep. I can deliver this to L.A. or in that area for a fee.
