Here we have a very fine Victorian 18K Yellow Gold Picture Locket with rose cut diamonds and pearls. This exquisite 18K gold (tested not marked) Picture Locket has Rose Cut Diamonds spelling out the word "Mizpah" and is also adorned with Pearls and a leaf and bow motif to the front. The back is plain free from engraving. This locket is large in scale and measures 4.2 cm East to West and 6 cm North to South including the large bale and weighs 30.5 grams. The locket opens and closes well and has its original glass to the right with a later replacement of plastic to the left. The new owner can put whatever the chose in this large beauty. The locket is adorned with 25 well matched natural pearls and has 36 small rose cut diamonds. There are some scratches to the back of the locket with about 4 tiny and one small dent of very little to no consequence (please see photos). This locket is a rare beauty and in very good antique condition considering its age (over 150 years old). Taken from the old testament, the word Mizpah has come to signify an emotional bond between people who are separated (either physically for a period of time of or by death). Mizpah jewelry became very popular in the mid to late 1800's and was worn by two people connected in in one way or another (marriage, friendship, family, etc). The meaning translates to "The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another" (Genesis 31:49). This is worn to signify a bond between two people as "God' is their witness.
As always, everything is described to the best of my ability and I do rely on my photos as an integral part of my item descriptions so please have a look at them.
Please note: This listing is for the 18K gold Mizpah locket and doesn't come with a chain. Questions are always welcome.
