Antique French English Aluminum Opera Glasses Engraved Repousse Garland Flowers C 1880
In the mid 1800's ingots of Aluminum were selling for about $550.00 per pound, more than what gold was selling for.
These highly fashionable Aluminum opera glasses or Theater Binoculars were very much so high fashion for the day. They are hand engraved, chased and repousse, garlands of flowers. The spinning focus wheel is made from mother of pearl. These were made in Europe in the third quarter of the 19th century. Most likely in France, possibly England. They are in good working order. The lenses are good condition .
It measures 4 inches wide x 2 ½ inches tall when closed. The large lens is 1 ½ inches in diameter.
