Book Slide Bookends By BETJEMANN'S London Howard & Co New York Pietra Dura
This folding bookend shelf has it all. It was made circa 1890 in London by famous maker George Betjemann. It was retailed by famous Howard & Co New York. In its resting position, the first thing you see are two round plaques about 1 ¾ inches in diameter with Pietra Dura, inlay cut and fitted polished semi precious stones, depicting floral leaf bouquets of Forget Me Knots, Morning Glory flowers and leaves. That is surrounded by gold gilt brass mounts with beveled edges. It has on the side holes for hand grips for carrying. It opens up, it has spring loaded sliding side panels, in the center a gilt brass label Howard & Co New York. The piece widens to hold more books. On each end a gold gilt brass label Betjemann's 11180, on the other side, another gold gilt brass label Patent 11180. It is made from burled veneer over wood, it shows some wear on the wooden corners, the base is blackened wood.
