Note: The S. S. United States was built in 1952 by United States Lines. At a cost of $78 million (in 1952 dollars) it was designed to be the world's fastest, most modern liner of the time, constructed entirely within the United States. This luxury ocean liner was also designed to capture the trans-Atlantic speed record, as it was subsidized by the United States government, with the intention of converting the vessel into a troop-carrier, should the need arise. In the mid-1970's the passenger ship sat vacant in Norfolk, VA, and by 1984, the entire ship's luxurious contents were sold at a well publisized auction in Norfolk, VA. This is table cloth was purchased at the 1984 inventory auction held in Norfolk, VA.
