*Ostby & Barton Company- Providence, Rhode Island. Mr. Englelhart Cornelius Ostby, (who was the president and founder) and Mr. Nathan B. Barton partnered in 1879 to form Ostby & Barton, an early East Coast manufacturing jeweler with an interesting history. In the 1894 dated trade publication- The Jewelers Circular and Horological Review, Barton is named as one of the directors of The Jewelers Board of Trade. Engelhart Cornelius Ostby was an immigrant goldsmith who had studied to be a jeweler at the Royal School of Art in his hometown of Oslo, Norway. Ostby perished on the ill fated RMS Titanic on April 10, 1912. He had been accompanied by his daughter Helene on this voyage, who survived by availing herself to one of the lifeboats. It was rumored that he was traveling with a large bag of gems which have never been recovered. Ostby & Barton jewelry has enjoyed a renewed collectible popularity due to both the historical significance, and the high quality and craftsmanship of their goods, many of which still survive in excellent condition today. Ostby & Barton was a highly prolific manufacturer primarily of men's and women's gold rings (stone rings, signet rings, baby rings, and wedding bands), but also bracelets, lavalier pendants, emblematic and class jewelry, and brooches including cameos. By the end of the 19th century, Ostby & Barton had become the largest manufacturer of rings in the United States. Their last known listing in jewelry trade publications was in the 1940s.
