About Synthetic Sapphires: In the late 1800s, sapphire and ruby (the mineral corundum), became the first gems to be created in a laboratory by the French chemist Auguste Verneuil. In 1902, he announced the development of his flame-fusion process for synthesizing corundum. In the 1920's, the early Art Deco years, synthetic ruby and sapphire were extremely popular, and also the norm, for that timeline. Synthetic ruby and sapphire, have the IDENTICAL physical and chemical properties as their natural counterparts. This means that they have the same crystal structure, specific gravity, refractive index, hardness, birefringence, and pleochroism as their natural counterparts. Very durable, positively regal, and prized throughout the ages, including numerous references in both the old and new testaments of The Bible. The gem symbolizes nobility, truth, and faithfulness and has adorned high clergy and royalty throughout the ages. Sapphires durability, second only to diamond, make it a wise choice for everyday wear, and for an alternative to the diamond engagement ring. Sapphire is also the traditional gem of choice for the 5th wedding anniversary.
