Wonderful antique Georgian Halley's Comet brooch, 14k yellow gold with the ORIGINAL oval cushion faceted opaline paste. Measures 1-3/8" x 1/2" tapering to 3/16". Weighs 6.5 grams. It has a very sturdy weight and feel, a very well made (and hand made) piece. Wide tube hinge and c shaped clasp with metal pin stem, all original. The opaline glass has iridescent color is in a coronet setting with multiple claw prongs and measures 10.5mm x 10mm x 7mm. The opaline glass shows wear, surface scratches and girdle chips, internal stress. It does face up quite well however, despite this, and we feel fortunate to have acquired this with it's original stone. The mounting and findings are in outstanding well babied condition. Typical of the majority of authentic antique jewels (particularly hand crafted pieces such as this), the piece is not gold hallmarked, but it has been carefully tested by two separate independent jewelers for karat fineness- (14k solid gold). Circa 1830s. Out of this world!
