Absolutely breathtaking antique mid-Victorian 18k yellow gold brooch features over 8 carats of natural vibrant yummy plum colored rhodolite garnets. The 18k gold mounting is completely hand-made with fine milgrained bead work accents and twisted rope wire borders. Four garnets dangle freely and cascade down into a truly beautiful presentation. This measures 1-3/8" x 1-5/8" and weighs 6.5 grams. WIth 8.24 carats total weight of faceted pear-shaped natural rhodolite garnets are all securely bezel set and the measurements break down thus:
Two (2)- 10.5mm x 6.5mm x 3mm (1.44 carat each, 2.88 carat total)
Four (4)- 9.5mm x 5.5mm x 2.5mm (.92 carat each, 3.68 carat total)
Four (4)- 8.5mm x 3.5mm x 2mm (.42 carat each, 1.68 carat total)
The piece is completely original with c shaped clasp, wide tubed hinge, metal pin stem that extends 4mm beyond the c clasp. No alterations or repairs, the garnets too, are all original to the piece. All the garnets are in extremely fine condition, except one which has a small chip, shown in the image in detail and only visible under magnification. Typical of the majority of authentic antique Victorian jewels (particularly hand crafted pieces such as this), the piece is not gold hallmarked, but it has been carefully tested by two separate independent jewelers for karat fineness. Has been cleaned very lightly and retains most of its richly age darkened patina. In outstanding extremely well babied condition, mid-Victorian circa 1860-80. Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January. Truly delicious!
