Victorian cherry stand made by the Merklen Bros - image 1 of 8

Fabulous square late Victorian cherry stand made by the Merklen Bros. This firm produced fancy rope twist carved pieces in New York City from 1885-1897. This solid table has a square top with a rope edge molding on the base of the skirt. It would make a wonderful music box stand. There are four splayed legs. Metal gargoyles attach these legs to the feet and the four turned cross stretchers. Notice the magnificent carved flame topped finial in the middle of the stretcher! The brass feet hold a wooden ball. Along with contemporary George Hunzinger, Merklen Bros created innovative designs incorporating very ornate carved turnings. This is a very fine example of their work!
