The BEST sterling repousse punch bowl and ladle we have ever offered for sale! The work of a master silversmith (please see photos for details). Repousse is relief decoration produced by hammering from the under side so that the decoration projects. This piece has fantastic three dimensional relief of flowers and foliage in a graceful shaped punch bowl on pedestal. The graceful ladle has a lip on each edge for pouring and has a floral repousse pattern similar to the punch bowl. Both are dated "Nov. 21, 1894" and signed "Hennegen Bates & Co, Sterling" of Baltimore Maryland. The bowl was featured in a TV-documentary/book project produced by Chris & Adrienne Kimball called Fannie's Last Supper, a project dedicated to recreating one of Fannie Farmer's fabulous 12-course dinners that she served at the end of the 19th century. There is a photograph featuring the punch bowl in the book, on page 197, and it's also featured multiple times in the documentary, now available via Netflix. An incredible example of silver craftsmanship that is signed, dated, and in beautiful original condition!
