Wonderful heavy Victorian young African American boy sculpture. He is wearing a faded green off center hat, a button-up overcoat and long shorts. His facial features have well defined eyes and two rows of white teeth, exhibiting a broad smile. His hands are clasped in front of him and his legs are crossed with bare feet. It has most of an original label on the bottom of his seat showing it was made in Boston, Mass. along with the number “345″ (see photo). I believe it was meant to sit on a mantel as a decoration. The paint is all original with white, green, brown and black. A very pleasing and rare piece of African American related art that is respectful without the stereotypical depiction that is so common from this period. Circa: 1890. Dimensions: 12″ H (from seated surface to top of hat). 23″ H (diagonal line from top of hat to toes). 6.5″ W. Condition: Great original condition with an lovely slightly crazed early patina to the original paint. Price: $6500
