Nippon Porcelain, Butter dish or sometimes referred to as tub, Nippon porcelain it is complete and has lid and perforated insert for the bottom of the dish. Border is hand painted, gold leafed diaper and knob, with applied handles on each side. Backstamp in blue is #84 rising sun, see photos. Height is 3 3/4" to tip of lid finial. 5 3/8" diameter handle to handle. Body is 5" diameter which tapers to 4" at the base. Lid is flange fitted with cut out for handles. The body of the dish and lid have the same hand painted pattern and diaper design. The background is black with pink peonies or springs of stylized pink flowers on alternating blue background. The handles, borders and diaper are gold leafed outlined. The top tip of the finial has some gold loss. See photos. No chips, cracks, breaks or repairs. Butter tubs complete with insert and lid are difficult to find. Yes there are plenty out there that are being called Sugar Bowls because they are missing the insert and lid, this is a complete butter tub. Dress up your table and set it with a finishing touch.
