The compote is 3 7/8" lid diameter, top opening 3 5/8", stands 2 3/4" high. Marked with Nippon porcelain backstamp #47, in magenta, see photo. The "ON" in Nippon is faint and just visible it does not photograph well. This white porcelain dish goes by many names and could have many uses. Dishes of this design have been called pin trays, trinket boxes, and footed powder boxes. It is elevated on three feet which are part of the mold. They have a relief design and are gold leafed. The lid is fitted by a raised ring to the dish opening. Lid has gold leaf rim, thin black outline, and grape clusters and leaves intertwining in a circle on the top. Grapes are symbolic to the Japanese. The hand painted design on the lid and body of the dish are silver and black with gold leaf outlining and detailing.
