Beer stein, earthenware or stoneware, straight sided plain grey, saltglazed which was ideal for heavy use in beer gardens, lid and front of the stein are engraved with large Latin letters HB and surmounted by crown. This traditional Hofbrauhaus brewery stein is 5 5/8" tall, has NO damage to stoneware, is marked on the under side with trapezoidal "no text" impressed stylized potters wheel mark. Open five ring hinge, strap and tang are solid, strap has stress mark. Engraved mark 0.5 L with underscore matches up to Reinhold Hanke mark.
In 1868 the first stoneware factory of Reinhold Hanke was established. After his death in 1886 his wife took over until her sons were old enough to take over in 1901. A disastrous fire destroyed all the molds in 1921 and they were not able to successfully restart the company.
