Antique teaching time dial, by J . E. Lyons with Original Box,This was and can still be used as a Teaching Aid for schools around the turn of the century, Circa 1880-1900, it was a dial with moving hands. We have the original box with original instructions. Designed, manufactured and sold by J. E. Lyons, of 23 Mall Street, Salem, Mass. Box is heavy press board, has reinforced corners, 12" by 14" by 1". Edges and corners show normal wear for its age. Box is structurally sound, however on the bottom there is a split at the top. Label on the top of the box is 5 3/8" by 6 1/4". This rare item was developed to assist teachers in overcoming the difficulties experienced in teaching children to tell time. What a novel idea that could still be used today when everything is digital. The dial is mounted on a wood frame, is 14 3/8" by 12" by 3/8". Clock dial is surrounded on a thick black walnut board, with fancy applied scrolling in the bottom corners, dial pan is 12" bronzed metal, dial is 10" aged paper, hands are original Maltese cross metal hands, clock stands upright on a metal stand. The face of the clock reads "when soiled it may be cleaned with a damp sponge." Condition is excellent. Original instructions have been carefully folded and are intact after all these years.
