Antique Wall Pocket,Papier Mache circa 1880 American. Wall pocket has shaped backboard measuring 16" by 12", actual pocket front is 10 3/8" by 9 1/2". Wall pockets became popular as early as the Victorian era. They were put to practical use for mail, notes and even were popular as slipper holders. This Victorian wall pocket is made of papier mache, painted with a marbling effect, has decalcomania applied decoration of putti, a maiden, birds and Victorian memorabilia. The finish is aged and original with some hand enhanced painting. The pocket has metal hinges and has cutout design. The ribbon is a 30+ year old replacement. NO damage or repairs, and is structurally sound. See photos.
