Early uncataloged Seth Thomas Adamantine Mantle Clock. Please read the full description and view all photos, they are and integral part of the description. This model with 4 free standing onyx columns (faux marbling) is the most desirable and collectible of any Adamantine clock models. This clock is similar to the “Shasta’ ‘Sucile” or “Niphon” models. The main difference is the curved serpentine top, circa 1894-1910. This is the best example as far as condition I have owned. The clock is 100% original and completely restored. The week duration marked Seth Thomas movement was completely rebuilt. See below for detailed restoration that was performed. The case is near mint. The case was disassembled, cleaned, each piece was hand polished then waxed. It presents itself like the day it was made. I do not spray a finish on the adamantine to hide damage, scratches, or chips like many others do. This is a restored original surface. All metal ornaments and feet are original and perfect. The brass bezel was polished and sealed. Nice label on the back. The original paper dial was badly damaged and not serviceable. A custom made dial that resembles porcelain was installed. It is exactly like the original. The clock chimes each hour on a deep cathedral gong. It has a beautiful sound. The half hour is announced by a simple single bell strike. The movement showed evidence of an amateur hobbyist’s abuse. When viewing the movement notice the pick marks around the pivots on the upper wheels of the movement. There now is a new shiny bronze bushing inside each of the “ice picked” areas. Two of the escape wheel pivots were replace because of damage done by this amateur bodger. All other pivots were resurfaced and polished on my lathe. 10 new bronze bushings were installed. The notches on the verge were stoned smooth and polished with a sapphire file, then trued to the escape wheel. All metal to metal wear was eliminated. The clock movement is now as good as new, runs and chimes properly. This was the worst attempt “butcher” job I have run into in 40+ years.
WHAT IS AN ADAMANTINE FINISH?
Seth Thomas held the patent on adamantine finishes from 1880 to the late 1920’s. Seth Thomas was the only clock maker to make adamantine clocks, NO EXCEPTIONS. Prior to assembling the wood cases, each piece of wood was coated with glue and a precut piece of Celluloid veneer was placed on the wood. The wood sections were placed in a vacuum, air was withdrawn and the celluloid quickly adhered to the wood. The wood was trimmed and then the case was assembled. This is a very strong and durable finish. The celluloid veneer is much thicker than regular wood veneer. Many of the original Seth Thomas factory labels stated : The finish is strong and durable, cannot be scratched or dented with normal usage, can be washed or cleaned without harm to the polish. Seth Thomas was the most credible clock maker of his time and put into writing that this was a quality clock and stood behind it.
