Art Nouveau jewelry box, casket or trinket box, 5 3/4” by 4”, 4 1/2” tall. Retains original gold gilt, it is not spray painted. Motif is high relief pine cones on the lid and front, stylized leaves and decorative swirling, made of cast metal with gold finishing. The hinge on the lid is sound and sturdy, 2 1/2” long is has not been broken or repaired. Referred to as jewelry boxes, jewel cases, caskets, coffins and trinket boxes, they were retailed and classified as Art Metal Wares. Although no makers mark the quality is evident. Sometimes those that normally did sign their wares were asked not to. For example, Sears and Roebuck and Montgomery Ward implied in their catalogs that they were the manufacturer supplying the merchandise, so they would not want a manufacturer’s trademark on the items they sold. The underside is marked “96”, most likely the case style. This box is lined with fine-pale colored silk and trimmed with a fine twisted satin cord. Spotless, clean, NO rips or tears. See photos the bottom is finely finished and detailed . Circa 1904-1918, production of these boxes lasted about fifteen years. We have two silver boxes also for sale, see item # 10390 and 10010-x.
