Mae Starr phonograph doll, made by Effanbee Doll Co., circa 1928, 30” tall, composition one piece shoulder plate and head, on the back of the shoulder plate is the identifying name: "Mae Starr Doll", cloth body, light brown/blonde human hair wig, blue sleep eyes, open mouth, jointed at the shoulders. Doll had been stored in a trunk in a basement that suffered severe water damage. The doll was in a sitting position, the water rose to her shoulder plate. The face was spared. She has a very pretty composition face, painted facial features, real upper lashes, painted lower lashes, red lip color. The doll experts know that the Strings coming out of the mouth are for stabilizing the sleepy eyes during shipping.
The doll was restored in 1985 using her damaged parts. Composition limbs (arms, legs and feet) have been professionally restored, fingers were intact with exception of right thumb.
Included are 6 cylinders, light bue celluloid over a cardboard core and metal disc top. They are 2 3/16 inches in diameter and 1 ¼” in length covered on one end with a metal plate with two round “finger holes” to facilitate insertion/removal of the cylinder from the playing mechanism. The Mae Starr doll originally came with six phonographic cylinders, that recited familiar nursery rhymes. These are original but are unmarked as to name of maker or verses. Restoration notes do not indicate whether cylinder player works. Record player is on the back and wind lever is on the side.
Dress, pantaloons and slip were new costume in 1985. Probably 60+ year old leather shoes. See photos.
