Inlaid French Balloon clock retailed by Tiffany. Please read the full description for valuable information. 100% original and fully restored. This miniature is solid mahogany case and has an immaculate original French polish finish which was cleaned and waxed. Inlay work has unusual Conch shell design. NO damage to any of the inlay, there is a slight shrinkage crack that was stabilized. This is very common to Balloon clocks. See item 10428 sale priced $199.

This original week duration time piece movement was rebuilt and retains the original 7 ruby jewel platform escapement. The platform has some stains that the ultra-sonic cleaner could not remove. It is clean with a perfect balance staff, hair spring and ruby jewels. These platform escapements were the one component of the clock that was hand made and assembled. When the platform is replaced due to damage 75% of the Antique value is lost, this is not an opinion but a fact that any certified clock appraiser would verify. This is a very strong running clock and is accurate to within a few minutes a week. See photo of what a properly restored French movement should look like. This fine example is an excellent value, considering that the shop restoration for the movement rebuild, brass work and case cleaning is well over $400. The problem you will have is locating a certified clock maker qualified to do the restoration. Circa 1890-1910. Made by the Cauaillet family of Saint Nicolas-d’Aliermont, France. For additional information refer to the Carriage Clock Book pg 435. This family of clock makers was known for making fine quality carriage clocks.

All of the brass components are original to this clock. All have been polished to a mirror finish and sealed. Clock is now presented just as it was over 100 years ago. The 3 1/2” diameter porcelain dial is mint original. Case is 9” tall, 5 1/4” wide, 3 1/2” deep. At some point an amateur clock repairer attempted to pry out the movement from the case, due to their lack of knowledge, they didn’t know how the clock movement was secured in the case. As a result of this bodger’s handiwork there are some pry marks around the brass bezel in the wood. See photos of other miniature clocks now available for sale from my personal collection.

History Behind The Popular Antique Balloon Clocks

The First Hot Air Balloon was launched on Sept. 19th, 1783 by the French Scientist Pilatre De Rozier. Its passengers were farm animals. Two months later the first manned Hot Air Balloon was launched in Paris by the two brothers Joseph & Etienne Montgolfier. Thus the craze for Hot Air Balloons and any item resembling them, which included clocks. The King of France Louis the 14th had the first Balloon clock commissioned. Just about every country that was known for the making of quality clocks, France, Switzerland, Austria, England and the USA began producing Balloon Clocks. Not only are they ecstatically pleasing, it is a clock so very unique and different from any other clock design. To this day they are one of the most sought after by Clock Collectors, myself included. I am now offering several of my personal Balloon Clock collection most of which have not seen the light of day for 40 years.
