Elgin National Watch Co. Marine Chronometer outer box only, Please read the full description, Mint original interior, working lock with key. The original finish was cleaned and waxed. The solid walnut case has original piano hinge. The ivorine medallion is imprinted with Serial Number 16373600. It is original and recessed into the lid. According to the serial number the box dates to 1911, indicating that it was probably on a Navy vessel during World War I. Box is in excellent condition, no cracks or other damage. The box would have contained either an Elgin Marine Chronometer, Father Time 21 jewel free sprung movement, with up and down indicator with a gimbal inner box; or possibly a 19 jewel B. W. Raymond deck watch, with up and down indicator and gimbaled inner box.
If you don’t have either one of these chronometer that requires the outer box it could be used for many other functions, especially if you need a locking wood box. A few reference books that show the chronometer with both boxes are: Pocket Watch Guide by R. Ehrhardt, 1972 and Illinois Horology by A. H. Miller and D. M. Miller 1977. This is one of a very few opportunities you will have to obtain a chronometer outer box in this fine condition for a fraction of its value.
