Unopened Heyden Chemical Works apothecary bottle, 3 3/8" tall, cylindrical 1 1/4" diameter, 1 ounce size, has original sealed metal cap, embossed with company name, trademark and Garfield N.J. Metal cap sealing was a safeguard to protect the contents from the atmosphere and securely held the cork in place. The clear molded glass bottle has cupped bottom, short neck, flat flange lip. Printed wrap around company label identifies contents as Duotol-Heyden a proprietary medicine, issued U.S. Letters Patent No.466913, granted Jan. 12, 1882, product Guaranteed Under the Pure Food and Drugs Act June 30, 1906 Serial No. 61. Item is for display only, not for use or consumption. The Heyden Chemical Works, organized with a capital of $150,000, was owned by the Chemische Fabrik von Heyden, of Raveboul, Germany, one of the great German chemical concerns. This company after 1914 did a large business, and its physical property and secret chemical processes and formulas became quite valuable. However with the onset of war, in 1918 A. Mitchell Palmer, Alien Property Custodian, took over the Heyden Chemical Works with its large plant at Garfield, N.J., on evidence showing that this concern, the second largest corporation of its kind in this country, was German owned and was seized as a German asset.
