This is a Rowland Marsellus Staffordshirecourtship scene pattern black transferware bowl featuring a courtship scene. The Rowland Marsellus Co was an American importer that brought over dishes made in Staffordshire, England. Most were decorated with important scenes from American History, or they were souvenirs with scenes of American cities and monuments. This pattern is unnamed, but the images are similar to Fragonard painting of troubadours and courtly love. The bowl is 7 1/4" wide, in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The glaze is still glossy, with just a few light utensil marks. MBR.
