Here is an antique Chinese huanghuali pear wood scholar's brush holder, brush pot, or bitong. It is 5 3/8" tall and 2 3/4" wide. There is a nice "ghost" in the grain on one side. Huanghuali is Chinese for "yellow flowering pear." It is a hardwood that is part of the rosewood family of trees, and is now nearly extinct. The pot is in excellent condition. There are no chips or cracks. These brush pots were made in various shapes over a period of many years. This one is from the early 1900s.
