This ring is very handsome, and would suit either a gent or a woman. My partner, Jeff, knew he wanted to buy this ring the minute he tried it on at the estate auction preview he discovered it at.
The large natural sapphire is a light greyish-blue with a distinct star that appears most prominently under a single light source (like the sun). (Please note that it is not easy to capture the star effect on camera; the star in this stone is more distinct, and more centered, than the photographs reflect). The star effect, called "asterism" in the gem-trade, is produced by spindle-like structures within the stone that, because of the way they naturally line up, reflect light in a certain way. There is a slight discoloration at about 8 o'clock on the sapphire (see the last two photos), but it doesn't detract from the overall beauty of the stone.
The burnished 18 karat gold on the sides of the mount serve to set off the beauty of the center stone making for an overall impressive presentation. This is an especially great gent's ring because it is not overly flashy, but it is a big, heavy ring that is appropriate for the guys.
Thanks for stopping in! ~ Amia
