This micro-mosaic piece is full of rich details, delicately presented with precise workmanship. The stone set at the center isn't a stone at all, but 'goldstone' a form of glass classic to Italy. In this case, the use of goldstone glass and the imagery of the mosaic itself tell us where it was made! Goldstone such as this is indicative of Murano, an island of Venice where the art of glass making has been practiced for hundreds of years. The symbol, a winged lion wearing a halo and holding a book, is the symbol of the city of Venice, the Lion of St Mark.
