This is a wonderful crinoline, I would estimate it dates to the 1920's and was probably used in either a theatre or for an elaborate dressing up party that the upper classes of the 1920's were so fond of. The crinoline is made in the style of 18th century panniers and is extremely voluminous! I apologise but it was incredibly difficult to photograph, if our weather was better here in the UK it would have been easier to photograph outside. If you do need more pictures please do let me know. The piece is made from cream cotton with several hoops, it shaped at the side to look like 18th century panniers. The 1920's saw a resurgence in the 18th century style used in designs like the Robe de Style, they also loved to indulge in dressing up for lavish parties in the style. The panniers do have some overall wear to them and one of the cotton ties needs re threading at the front. There are also a couple of holes and some water marks to the main body of the skirt. The panniers are finished at the very bottom with a cotton frill. The piece is huge but incredibly sturdy and well made. I think it would make a fabulous display on a mannequin or with some TLC be worn with care.
