Broderie Perse Quilt Top - 19th Century for study or restoration
This is a beautiful example of a Broderie Perse Quilt top made some time during the 19th century. I am not selling it as perfect as it does have faults but it would make a super piece for study or to be reused in projects or even a skilled hand could restore the damaged appliqués with fabric of the same era. The appliqué is hand sewn onto a cotton backing which does have one stain on it that I have shown in the pictures. The back of the quilt top also does have some age related foxing marks. The term Broderie Perse refers to pieces of Chintz type fabrics being appliquéd onto a backing fabric in a scene or design. I was told by a quilt maker that fabric at this time was expensive so as a way of using up any left the lady would appliqué the design onto the quilt top so as to avoid waste....I love how quilters have always been so thrifty. This quilt top has some damage to it and six of the appliqués are partly missing and have worn away. There is some damage also to a couple of the others. I am sure a skilled hand would be able to reinstate these areas that have worn with fabric from the same era. The quilt top is a lovely piece of history and would make a wonderful addition to a collection or for study. The quilt top measures 64 inches by 66.5 inches
